""Hi Andreas. Thanks for getting in touch... I understand your doubts of course. Actually, several odd features (head shape, dark upper head, dark iris, bill coloration, contrast between fore- and rear-cheeks due to a dark blur under the eye...) all tend towards the Common Pochard. So, it might well be a hybrid between Common and Red-crested Pochards... To completely rule out a weird juvenile RCP, it might have been better to see the wing bar. So, all in all, the hybrid explanation is the better one, but there's still a little doubt... Sorry !"

"Yes, I guess a juvenile could be full grown by now... But the facts that no juvenile was present contributes to the hybrid theory..."
Desuden følgende kommentar fra tyske hybrid-birder Jörn Lehmhus:
"concerning your bird I think it is most likely a hybrid with an Aythya, the bill color and the extensive pale area atrround the base of the bill point to that. also it seems to be subtly different in head and body shape to a Red crested pochard (however that is more difficult to see).
It is not fully clear to me which Aythya is involved. This one at Braunschweig clearly is a hybrid with Tufted duck:

but yours looks better for a hybrid with Common pochard I think....
Best regards, Jörn"
